Announcement from the Scratch Foundation’s Board of Directors

The following is a statement from the Scratch Foundation’s Board of Directors:

“As of [October 7, 2022] Shawna Young has stepped down from her position as Executive Director of the Scratch Foundation and will no longer be working for the organization.

The Board of Directors is deeply committed to the mission, vision, and values of the Scratch Foundation, and will undertake a search for a new Executive Director who will work closely with the staff to expand creative, equitable learning opportunities for young people around the world.

Chief Philanthropy Officer, Mindee Barham, and Chief Product Officer, Sarah Smirnoff, have agreed to serve as interim leaders until a new Executive Director is hired. They will work closely with other members of the Scratch Leadership Team: Elaine Atherton, Bob Carr, Francisco Cervantes, Maria Janelli, Shenkiat Lim, and Yvette Phillip.

During her two years as Executive Director, Shawna has helped the organization significantly grow and diversify its staff, led the development of a strategic plan, hired a talented leadership team, expanded Scratch’s programming around the world, and helped in successful fundraising efforts. Shawna and the Board of Directors have decided that the time is now right for her to move onto her next opportunity.
